Look, it’s ridiculous that we send people to space and have nanotechnology in our homes but if I want to know how healthy my boobs are I have to smash them between metal plates while my face is smooshed against a plexiglass barrier in the most awkward position imaginable

Roll on the Star Trek Tricorder diagnosis technique. I get my last free mammogram in a couple of weeks. A very good friend was “lucky” that they detected aggressive breast cancer on her last free mammogram. Once we turn 69 in Aotearoa mammograms are no longer free.

@Miraz Yikes, what an odd and specific point to decide not to provide an essential health service

@Miraz Sorry to hear about your friend too, hope she is doing okay. :( My mom died of breast cancer. It’s a rough road.

You can still organise and pay for them yourself after 69. I think it’s a question of costs.

Thanks. She’s in the middle of heavy duty chemo which seems to be shrinking the tumour. Sorry to hear about your mum.

@Miraz I just looked up average cost in US out of pocket, (curious) around $150usd but much more for a diagnostic mammogram.

@Miraz here’s hoping the chemo does the work and she’s able to have many more long and lovely years ❤️

I recently read about blind people who can palpate breasts at least as well as this examination method you describe.
But yes, look at cancer itself. We are still shooting chemotherapy at it, which in itself destroys the body even more.
The big advantage of your examination is that you don’t have to do it every day, fortunately.

@dominikhoecht great point, it’s certainly a much bigger problem than mammogram methodology.
