Does anybody else have a “car book”? Just a book… that stays in your car… There when you’re waiting for a few minutes and need something to read. Right now mine is a collection of short stories by Bukowski.

Yes! I lived on an island in Washington state for 23 years and commuted off by car ferry every day. Between waiting for the the boat to arrive and the passage, I had at least 45 minutes morning and night to read or write (if the boat overfilled it took an hour longer). People wondered how I dealt with such a long commute, but I secretly loved the reflection time. I read many, many books during those commutes.

, I really like the idea. Like most people, I automatically reach for the phone. This is a much better use of those few minutes.

@robertbreen Oh, that is ideal reading time! My wait times tend to be shorter and sporadic, but still plenty of minutes that add up to hours.

@matthewcowen Sometimes I end up on my phone too. But once the NYT crossword makes me feel dumb, car book is there for me.

@patrickrhone can I be buddies too since I always carry a book with me absolutely everywhere (just in case)? 🤓

@frank I think this concept could translate to other modes of transportation, no car necessary!

don’t have a car here in the city, but I should have a subway one probably

I usually have one of the Norton anthologies in the car as a backstop for the times that I’m not carrying the Dan Allosso book club selection. Helps to pass the time while I’m stuck carpooling a munchkin to ballet classes and rehearsals.

You are correct. I might try this on my next train or plane ride…. wait… ;-)

Not a car book, but thanks for reminding me. I just installed FBReader on my phone. That gives me access to all sorts of public domain books and the FBReader app doesn’t track me like the Kindle and Kobo apps do.
