Enjoyed reading this interview of one of my favorite bloggers @amerpie
π The open web as gift economy | @tracydurnell
From the first, making things and sharing them was part of my online experience. To me, it is normal and natural to have my own website where I post things.
This is the biggest difference between how I view being online and how, say, my kids view it. And oh, what a difference it is.
π Trust | @patrickrhone
…a loss of trust in society β trust in government, trust in institutions, trust in each other β is the cause of a break down and, if left uncorrected, end to that society. Period. There is no βbutβ. You can not have a society without it. Society rises and falls on the strength of it.
π Your resolution is to have discipline and put in the work
There isnβt a system, tool, or app that will magically make you better at something.
Constantly researching and trying new tools or systems is a form of procrastination.
The reality is you just need to get to work. Do the work. Put in the time. Do the thing, regardless of the system, tool, or tech. Those things will come as you do the work. Finding a new note taking app isnβt a goal, it is a tactic used to delay you doing the real work of writing things down.
“This is more of a quiet meditation over a plain cup of coffee. A wish that we should not forget that technology is there to be used by us. Not the other way around. That streamlining just because we can is not always good. That the technology we create and use affects us and in some cases even controls how we develop. Sometimes it is good to do as Tom Waits sings: Take the long way home. Donβt run straight ahead just because it is the fastest way.”

yes to what @jabel says
What if we just didnβt? What if we just stopped clicking on news stories about him and trust that if something is important enough, it will find its way to our attention? What if we just nope out of voluntarily surrendering to a man so deeply desirous of having all eyes on him?

π I really like @tracydurnell’s rules for where reading attention goes:
1: Choose what to read based on my interest, not βto be an informed personβ
2: Be skeptical of titles that invoke fear; be wary of articles framed to make me feel superior to others
3: Prioritize information that will directly impact my life or community; pay less attention to news outside my control
People may not be persuadable by reason, and we donβt need to assume that they are. But we do have to live as if people are persuadable by love, mercy, and the life you are willing to live with them. This is, after all, the most meaningful form the truth ever takes.

Criticism can be the most fierce when itβs coming from within, and there are always more ways to punish yourself. So Iβll repeat advice that I hope someday Iβll be able to take: Be kind to yourself and offer yourself grace.
In a society that increasingly values visibility over privacy, choosing to keep parts of our lives to ourselves can feel almost countercultural. Journaling is, in fact, punk as fuck.
